Placenta Encapsulation Services

What is PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION?

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the mother's placenta by dehydrating, powdering and encapsulating it for the mother to ingest.  Jenny does all the work for you in her exam room at The Natural BirthHouse, so you don't have to see a thing!

What is PLACENTOPHAGY?

Simply put, it is when you ingest your placenta.

The purpose of ingestion is to reintroduce hormones, protein, minerals and other nutrients to the mother’s body following labor and birth. It's reported to:

  • restore physical and emotional balance

  •  prevent or lessen the risk of "baby blues" and postpartum depression

  •  increase breast-milk production

  •  shorten healing time

  •  increase maternal energy levels

  • provide an over-all feeling of wellness to aid in the transition between pregnancy and the early postpartum period.

Jenny has been encapsulating placentas for more than 10 years, serving hundreds of families in the Acadiana area. She seeks to be humble in her service to mothers. You will not receive a one-size fits all approach to care and preparation, but attentiveness, full respect, and a listening ear. This means also providing support and resources during the most critical time in the immediate postpartum period of motherhood. Jenny is also a lactation counselor, and while making her postpartum visit with you to explain the use of your capsules, she can also take a quick peek at baby & you to check on your nursing relationship!

F.A.Q.

What do the capsules look like? The capsules look just like whole-food vitamins when you get them. I do all of the icky work! You do not even have to see it if you don’t want to. Unless you want prints of course! Prints are a unique way of remembering your pregnancy.

Do I have to touch my placenta? No! I want you to bond with your baby after birth, not worry about your placenta, which is why we plan beforehand to mail you a kit with explicit directions for your nurse, doctor, or midwife to pack it up safely for transport. You won’t have to do anything except snuggle and breastfeed your baby. Simply call or text me when you have the baby and we make arrangements for pickup!

Do they smell? The capsules tend to have a metallic smell or a ‘gamey’ smell to them. This is normal! I tell my moms to eat some food with them to aid in the absorption of them, but they usually don’t complain about the smell or taste.

How do I store them? They are technically shelf stable, like most vitamins. Keep them in a cool, dry place, like a cabinet. If you prefer though, the refrigerator or freezer is fine as well, and many mothers decide on this option. Any temperature stable environment is great! If you have any capsules left over, place your bottle in a deep freezer to keep them good indefinitely and preserve them for menopause or very stressful life events.

How many capsules do I get and does it matter how many capsules my placenta makes? Most placentas I prepare make anywhere between 80-160 capsules.  Sometimes you get more, sometimes less! The main thing to remember is that just like every woman is different, every placenta is too. Each placenta has the exact hormones and nutrients that you need. Just because one woman gets 84 capsules and another one 198 does not mean that one has more benefits than the other.

Is it safe? The short answer is yes, provided you have a placenta specialist who is certified. We are triple-certified through the Association of Placenta Preparation Arts (APPA), and maintain the absolute highest standards of safety. We certify yearly and are constantly working on our continuing education with the organization. If you have any questions about any conditions you have, etc. please call or text me!
